What suspension noise can indicate

Suspension components work together to manage vehicle movement, tyre contact and ride comfort. As parts wear, noises can appear, but the same sound can come from several different components.

Common sounds and possible sources

Knocking or clunking over bumps can be related to control-arm bushes, ball joints, stabiliser links or shock-absorber mounts. Squeaking can come from worn rubber components, while loose parts may rattle on rough roads.

Noises while turning can originate from steering, suspension or drivetrain components, so the location and driving condition are useful information for an inspection.

Look for related warning signs

Unusual noise alongside uneven tyre wear, excessive bouncing, poor steering response, vehicle pulling or reduced stability should be investigated. Replace only the components found to be worn or damaged.
